Summer is finally here in Clifton and it’s time to enjoy some fun in the sun, time with friends, and family vacations. Part of enjoying the heat is knowing that you can return home to cool off with central air. It’s easy to take our air conditioners for granted until they stop working. How is your central air system running this year? Is it running efficiently and cooling your New Jersey home adequately? When was the last time that you showed your system a little love with preventative maintenance?

When our HVAC contractors are called for central air repair, we find that there are a few main issues that our clients in the Clifton area may have with their HVAC system. Read on to learn more about common problems that can arise when your central air system needs a repair or maintenance, what it may mean for your system, and how to avoid costly repairs.

Unit Stops Working

This can be the most frustrating problem, especially when the temperature hits seasonal highs, because, as we’ve said previously, nothing is more frustrating than an air conditioning unit that simply isn’t working. If your system stops working, it can mean a few things:

Electrical Problem

Sometimes when your system isn’t working, it isn’t a problem with your central air unit, but with your general electrical system. Make sure your air conditioner has power by checking the circuit breaker or fuse box.

Dirty Filter

Your central air unit may not be working simply because it needs a quick filter change. Furnace filters should be changed or cleaned regularly. If you think this is the problem, simply change the filter or clean it and see if your central air unit begins to run like it used to.

Unit Needs Cleaning

The air conditioner itself needs to be maintained and cleaned regularly as well. Often, when a unit quits working, it is due to dust or other debris coating the condenser coils. If this is the case, simply wash the coils with a garden hose.

If these solutions don’t solve the problem and your central air unit refuses to work, then it may be time to call a professional HVAC contractor for central air repairs.

Won’t Stop Running

Maybe your system is running, but it’s running too long, or even worse, all the time. Even though you may be staying cool enough, this problem can still be a tell-tale sign—that could have catastrophic repercussions for your monthly energy bill—that your unit needs maintenance. An air conditioner that continues to run may need some quick seasonal maintenance or a repair.
